RPO — Selected Poetry of Matthew Arnold (1822-1888)

Matthew Arnold’s poetry is diverse, both restless and lyrical. He goes a-wandering between two worlds, “one dead / the other powerless to be born…” In his verses, there always seem to be a war going on between the words and thought. My favorite poem of his is Dover Beach. Soothing images of calm seas are juxtaposed against fraught images of fever and illness.
