Eric Rohmer | Senses of Cinema

This just in: Eric Rohmer, erudite humanist, one of the founders of the New Wave for French cinema, and editor of Cahiers du cinema film journal, dead at 89.

If you haven’t seen Claire’s Knee, Pauline a la plage, and A Tale of Winter yet, then it’s about time you do. Among the founders of the French New Wave (Godard, Varda, Truffaut [RIP], Malle [RIP], Chabrol, Rivette, Resnais, Melville [RIP]), Rohmer was the Balzac of the group. He was considered by critics as the one who had the most romantic of philosophies among the other founders. Eric Rohmer passed away this morning, January 11th 2010 in Paris.

{ April 4, 1920 – January 11, 2010 }

Rest easy, sir.
