Jean-Luc Godard: Film is over. What to do? | Film | The Guardian
Jean-Luc Godard has pronounced the word and meaning of auteur dead. That Godard himself declared it makes it official. The age of the auteur is no more. And from the moment filmmakers like Coppola, Friedkin, and Cimino all declared themselves an auteur, that word has long died. You have to remember that the principal legacy of the auteur theory was the legitimization for serious discussion of many films and directors once dismissed as insignificant, filmmakers like Abel Gance, Jean Vigo, Jean Renoir, Alfred Hitchcock, Howard Hawks, and Nicholas Ray, each of whose personal imprint is traceable from film to films. The auteur theory is flawed and patent bullshit. It was merely something that earned the French Nouvelle Vague movement a reputation in the eyes of their detractors for encouraging critical indulgence. The auteur theory is flawed and patent bullshit. Oh wow. I’ve clearly grown up.
